The Converse Console

BRIEF Flatpack Furniture Studio Course, Fall 2024. The brief was to make a flatpack furniture prototype that was shippable in a standard UPS box for a trial assembly in a 7 minute period.

MATERIALS Cherry hardwood, maple tambour screen, maple veneer, birch ply, linen, brackets and screws. Wood finished with spot repairable hard wax oil.

Flatpack furniture tends to focus on utility in a way that sacrifices the style and expression that furniture can have in a space. The Converse Console has a distinct design language, one that invites both physical interaction and visual interest.

The Converse Console is a miniature flatpack credenza utilizing CNC machining techniques and at-home assembly while still maintaining some of the warmth and heirloom quality of hand-built furniture. Combining the kinetic nature of a classic tambour screen in a non-traditional 360 degree round to allow for interesting movement and exploration.

The Converse Console is meant to embody more than home storage. Designed to hide clutter while standing as a point of visual interest in a space, its carved surfaces are inspired by sound waves, symbolizing conversation and social fluidity of a home. It is something worth conversing about, a centerpiece for connection.
